1939 Ford Standard Hot Rod

This 1939 Ford Standard is an excellent example of a traditional hot rod.  Known as fat-fendered cars, this era of hot rods from 1939 to 1948 is known for being more roomy and having rounded lines with “Fat” fenders.  This particular 1939 Ford Standard presents very well and is built to drive.  The Stroker flathead sounds awesome and pulls strong. Actually, we are impressed with how torquey this engine feels out on the road. Bang through the gears thanks to a 5-speed manual transmission. If you are wondering about the difference between a “Standard” model and a “De Luxe”, Standards are an evolution of the earlier 1937 and 1938 headlight and grille design, while the De Luxe was a precursor to the next generation of Ford design cars with more outboard headlight placement. Styling would continue to evolve every year through World War II until the revolutionary platform change in 1949.

Description

1939 Ford Standard Chassis Details

The original frame has been updated with Mustang II-based independent suspension, Aldan adjustable coilovers, rack & pinion steering, and disc brakes.  The back half consists of leaf springs, standard shocks, and disc brakes. The chassis has been updated for improved reliability over stock and a more modern driving experience.

Under the hood: Flatheads Forever!

The flathead in this hot rod oozes cool. The engine has been stroked to 286 cubic inches, then topped with Edelbrock aluminum heads and triple Stromberg Super 7 carburetors. We like that this car has an electric fan for reliability. The engine looks great and sounds awesome with a healthy exhaust note.  You’ll appreciate showing off your flathead through the open hood sides.

Body and Interior Details

The Hot Rod Black paint is in very good condition with excellent luster and chrome trim A few paint chips on the driver’s door edge are the only flaws.  The smoothie wheels are painted in traditional red and covered with whitewall B.F. Goodrich Radial TA tires. Tires have most of their tread life remaining. The tall rear sidewall height contributes to the car’s traditional hot rod vibe and contributes to ride quality.

The interior is in near-perfect condition, featuring two-tone brown tweed upholstery, Dakota Digital electronic gauges, a Custom Autosound stereo, and a really cool chrome shifter. The car has manual windows and a beautiful wire-spoke steering wheel. The interior is built for comfort and touring. Side glass is mildly tinted.

Overall Impressions

This 1939 Ford Standard would be right at home at any custom and classic car event. It has a great stance and comfortable seats with room for four people plus luggage in the sizable trunk. The big and little whitewall tires with red smoothie wheels deliver that perfect hot rod stance and appearance.  Glass weatherstripping and trim are all in excellent condition.
